چکیده

Abstract Purpose Use of spent coffee grounds (SCG) in horticulture has deleterious effects on plant health and yields, suggesting that processing SCG is necessary prior to field application. To this end, two products an based biorefinery were investigated: primary chars from the hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) enzymatic protein hydrolysates. Methods Primary produced under various HTC regimes raw SCG, alkaline pre-treated SCG. evaluated germination toxicity tests soil stress conditions using Arabidopsis thaliana ( ). Proteolytic enzymes screened production hydrolysates; biostimulant activity growth Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, normal cold auxin-like was assessed. Results Toxicity assays with land cress Barbarea verna L.) showed a maximum 35% increase root length, relative control. In trials, outstanding performances recorded at 100 t/ha for SCG: rosette diameter dry weight increased by 531 976%, respectively, hydrolysate Bacillus lichenformis proteolysis (glycine present 47% total) gave 140% seeds expanded cotyledons, Auxin-like also measured extracts. Conclusion Cascade process design used valorise major waste stream. Removal phytotoxic components hydrochars enhanced growth, while hydrolysates observed. Graphical

Isolation of polyphenols from spent coffee grounds and silverskin by mild hydrothermal pretreatment.

In this study, a new method for isolation of polyphenols (PP) from spent coffee grounds (SCG) and coffee silverskin (CS) is described. The method consisted of a mild hydrothermal pretreatment at 120°C, for 20 min, using a liquid-to-solid ratio of 20 mL/g. PP (determined as gallic acid equivalents, GAE) were the most abundant components in the extracts produced by this method, corresponding to 3...

Carotenoids of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown on soil enriched with spent coffee grounds.

The impact of spent coffee grounds on carotenoid and chlorophyll content in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata) was evaluated. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted with spent coffee amounts ranging from 0% to 20% (v/v). All evaluated pigments increased proportionally to spent coffee amounts. Lutein and β-carotene levels increased up to 90% and 72%, respectively, while chlorophylls in...

Chemical, Functional, and Structural Properties of Spent Coffee Grounds and Coffee Silverskin

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) and coffee silverskin (CS) represent a great pollution hazard if discharged into the environment. Taking this fact into account, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, functional properties, and structural characteristics of these agroindustrial residues in order to identify the characteristics that allow their reutilization in industrial ...

Characterization of polysaccharides extracted from spent coffee grounds by alkali pretreatment.

Spent coffee grounds (SCG), obtained during the processing of coffee powder with hot water to make soluble coffee, are the main coffee industry residues and retain approximately seventy percent of the polysaccharides present in the roasted coffee beans. The purpose of this study was to extract polysaccharides from SCG by using an alkali pretreatment with sodium hydroxide at 25°C, and determine ...
